Herbal Healing

Wildcrafting & Sustainability

Dr. Roffe trains all his students and staff in the traditional Native American Rule of Four and Seven, which means that only one out of four plentiful leaves, flowers, fruits, and other seasonally regenerative parts are taken from indigenous plants, and only one out of seven roots. Endangered plants are never taken, but invasive non-native plants that are medicinal may sometimes be taken freely, in cooperation with forest rangers or landowners.

The Medicine Wheel

In his book Kvniakati Tsulawi Native American Herbal Medicine, Dr. Roffe places both indigenous and exotic herbs according to their energetics in the Medicine Wheel of twelve or more physiological functional effects. Each class focuses on one of these groups of herbs with similar functions:

  1. Warming herbs and stimulants

  2. Gall and lymph cleansing plants

  3. Respiratory herbs

  4. Stomach soothing and milk-generating herbs

  5. Heart and circulation plants

  6. Small intestine and immune integrity plants

  7. Kidney cleansing and strengthening herbs

  8. Reproductive plants for women and men

  9. Liver and anti-tumor plants

  10. Large Intestine and musculoskeletal plants

  11. Spleen and sedative herbs

  12. Bladder and blood-building herbs

Spagyric Extractions

Most manufacturers' herbal extracts are prepared to a lesser potency than can be achieved. We use unique techniques for every plant depending on its proportions of water- and alcohol- soluble active ingredients. Some are prepared only from fresh plant materials. all are prepared according to spagyric techniques, which carefully balance the various soluble components.
